Rafael Anton Irissari is one of the most celebrated contemporary and ambient music artists worldwide. His work is predominantly associated with post-minimalist and drone music, exploring dense layers of reverb and delays, with a highly cinematic approach. His career highlights deeply epic and emotive compositions released on labels such as Ghostly International and Umor Rex and performances in venues as diverse as museums and churches, where he often highlights the physicality of his sound.

In each live set he combines a variety of acoustic equipment with visual elements and, for his return to MUTEK MX as part of the PLAY 2 program at Casa del Lago, he will present BURDENS, a multi-channel audio performance inspired by Chapultepec Forest.

BURDENS uses sound to explore themes of memory, identity and existential struggle, with the biblical grasshopper symbolizing vulnerability. Inspired by Philip K. Dick’s dystopian narrative “The Grasshopper Lies Heavy,” which delves into alternate realities and the psychological weight of choice, BURDENS invites listeners to think about the effects of colonialism on modern identity.
