Following the project’s kick-off at MUTEK Forum 2024, the Wilding AI Lab makes a stop at the 20th anniversary of MUTEK Mexico. The lab is designed as a public experiment for artists, scientists, technicians, theorists and students to demonstrate, test, and experiment with the latest AI systems bridging large-language models, generative AI sound and spatialized audio. It presents an open space to reopen the black boxes of generative AI. It gathers folks to encounter each other and the manifold artistic and technological experiments, interventions and provocations, which not only imagine but materially manifest wild AI futures.
In contrast to dominant paradigms of AI, which aim to classify and accurately predict the world, the lab asks what it would mean for AI to become more wild both in theory and in practice. It draws inspiration from the early days of generative AI, the days of multimodal systems outputting six finger hands, AI sound producing nothing but lo-fi gibberish and not so large language models predicting a character, not a word, at a time. Though seemingly retro by now, it was these glitches and their aesthetics of misrepresenting the world rather than accurately predicting it that opened both technological and social cracks for artistic explorations.
Over two days the lab features a series of inspirational talks, skill-sharing workshops and hands-on experimentation by artists and researchers including Maurice Jones, Alexandre Saunier, Sahar Homami, Debashis Sinha, and Daniela Huerta (baby vulture). The lab is open and free for participants local and international to join the discussions, learn about the application of generative AI in spatial audio, and collectively explore the wilder territories of AI.
Wilding AI is a collective research-creation project supported by MUTEK, MUTEK Mexico, MONOM Studios, 4DSOUND, Neutone Inc., Concordia University, and the Society for Arts and Technology.
