Heckmann's inspiration to work with light-based media comes from the abundance of imagery in the club scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s. After a 9-month internship with Derivative and a 6-month travel Months through history as video jockey for Canadian rock legends RUSH, Heckmann switched universities from Ilmenau to attend the Bauhaus Weimar and shaped his experimental practice previously gaining experience under the direct influence of MX-Zehn's Stefan Kraus. Derivative offered him a position as Technical Director in early 2006, embarking Heckmann on permanent resettlement in Toronto, where he has lived and worked ever since.
