Erin Gee is a Canadian artist and composer (TIO’TIA:KE – MONTREAL) who takes inspiration from the human voice and applies it to poetic and sensorial technologies, likening the vibration of vocal folds to electricity and data across systems, or vibrations across matter. Her musical practice is characterized by enigmatic whispered vocals and lushly textured electroacoustic music heavily influenced by the sounds and structures of ASMR.

Gee is a DIY expert in affective biofeedback, implicating the body of the listener as part of her cybernetic systems in place. Through principles of emotional labor, emotional measurement, emotional performance, and emotional reproduction, she has made work in neural networks, virtual reality, networked music performance, work for children’s choir, and robotics. Through her engagement with new technologies she seeks to foster critical empathy, emphasize the power of unconscious sensory programming, and to dissolve the divisions between emotion and reason.

Gee was hired as a Limited-term Assistant Professor at Concordia University (2015-2017) teaching Sound Production, Gender and Technology Studies, and Sound Studies. She is a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholar and doctoral student in Composition et Création Sonore at Université de Montréal, articulating feminist methods for composing through biofeedback music.

She is currently artist in residence at the Institut Quantique de l’Université de Sherbrooke in partnership with Sporobole artist-run centre (CA).

Gee’s artistic research has been featured in publications such as, Scientific American blog, VICE, MusicWorks, and Canadian Art magazine. Her work has been exhibited in museums and electronic art festivals internationally. She is an active member of Perte de Signal artist collective (Montreal) and is represented by Wicked Artists.
