With an artist-centered approach the joint program explores new virtual playgrounds in order to overcome the current physical disconnection through the convergence of the two artistic communities of Japan and Mexico. For 5 continuous days MUTEK’s virtual festival platform will see more than 35 performances across 3 virtual stages, an interactive Gallery exhibiting more than 19 cutting-edge digital artworks from Mexico, Japan and around the globe, a series of lectures, talks and master classes in a virtual Digi Lab format, and a Listening Room with non-stop selections from the MUTEK network’s archives. The Mexican-Japanese core will be extended through the MUTEK Connect series, which provides space for collaborations with the global MUTEK branches and our international partners from Insomnia Festival and Ekko Festival in Norway, Club to Club in Italy and South Korea’s B39/PRECTXE festival.
The live program will be streamed on our virtual festival platform (virtual.mutek.org) between Wednesday, December 9 and Sunday, December 13, 2020. To make listening easier, each performance is premiered and then replayed according to Asian, European/African and American time zones.
In order to develop sustainable models rooted in renewing the appreciation and valuation for creative practice, which is aimed at benefiting local artistic communities, as well as our extended networks of technicians, freelancers, and cultural organizations, we ask for a contribution of $10 USD (approx. ¥1050) to access the full virtual festival experience. The virtual festival pass is included for everyone that already bought a ticket to MUTEK.JP's physical events at Stream Hall.

Two artistic communities in Mexico and Japan converge
The core program of the virtual festival activities revolves around the convergence of the two artistic communities of Mexico City and Tokyo. From Wednesday, December 9, to Sunday, December 13 the joint program of 22 performances will bring forward the crème de la crème of both cities for a feast of audiovisual performances, musical explorations and technological experiments. This includes the live streaming of the Tokyo performances taking place December 10 to 12 at Stream Hall.

The second convergence point of the two festival editions is the virtual gallery space. The joint exhibition invites local and international artists, long-time MUTEK collaborators, as well as new kids on the block for a showcase of cutting-edge digital artworks critically re-imagining our digital futures in a post-pandemic world. Be prepared for an exploration of a number of pieces utilizing Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Interactivity, and Sonification as the immersive mediums of choice.

MUTEK Connect is a unique opportunity to develop, experiment with, and evaluate a new model of digital interconnectivity based on the creative connections existing between Tokyo & Mexico City, the global MUTEK branches and our international collaborators at Insomnia Festival and Ekko Festival in Norway, Club to Club Festival in Torino, Italy, as well as the B39 artistic center and its associated festival, PRECTXE, in South Korea.
