Debashis SinhaCA/QC
Debashis is one of the most exciting composers to emerge from Montreal. His ever-expanding sensibility has allowed him to fully immerse in creating soundtracks and sound design for entertainment—work that has already earned him accolades such as the Louis Applebaum Composers Award—as well as navigate the boldest spaces of electronic experimentation, such as the Elektronmusik Studion, editions of MUTEK in Japan and Montreal, and the International Symposium on Electronic Art.
In this process of constant reinvention, Debashis unleashes his skills as a percussionist—his primary training—to apply the principles of rhythm and its transformations to transmedia experiments that incorporate visuals, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in hypnotic performances. In this space of experimental creation, Debashis exposes us to spiritual and cultural reflections that take us into a state of trance: the reimagining of Hindu scriptures, the reconnection with Bengali ancestry and a possible encounter with the divine from the mundane, from the technological.
Sinha will be performing alongside his AI Mutual, created by HEXORCISMOS from a dataset of percussion improvisation. Using table-top bass drum extended techniques, HEXORCISMOS‘ Semilla AI interface and live processing Sinha and his Mutual will engage in a unique conversation that offers an alternative engagement with algorithmic tools, prioritizing listening, consideration, and inspiration as opposed to the usual tropes of market-driven machine learning outcomes.
